F.A.C.E. – The Figurative Art Conference and Expo
November 8-11, 2017
Biltmore Hotel, Miami Florida
UPDATE: November 7, 2017
Looking forward to my Friday morning demo at the Figurative Art Convention and Expo in Miami. It’s going to be great fun. I’ll be starting with a brief slide presentation, showing examples of my sculptures and paintings. This is a good opportunity to illustrate how these two mediums correlate solving design issues in much the same way.
Next, I’ll be doing three life-size character busts based on traditional Native American motifs. A child, a young woman, and and old man. Starting with a simple armature, a pipe, aluminum wire, and clay over tinfoil. All three will evolve out of the first sculpture. The third, a Sioux warrior dressed in traditional regalia with a full head dress, I think will be the most interesting.
Through this process I will show where small changes in wardrobe, or gesture such as the tilt of the head, completely change the mood and feeling of the piece. I will also demonstrate how lost and found lines, value changes, sharp and soft edges, come into play.
I will be engaging the audience, and answering questions as I sculpt. I’ve been given over 2.5 hours which I think is fairly long for a presentation, but because this demo is very dynamic I think I’ll be able to hold everyone’s interest.
Hope to see you there.
Painting the figure takes on many forms, from classical academic realism to looser, brushier representations. It’s time the figure received its own conference, a place for museum-quality figure painters — and those who strive to be — to gather to exchange ideas, learn from great masters, improve their painting skills, and form a community to carry the flag for realism.
Held on the East Coast of the United States at the prestigious and historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables (Miami), Florida, the first annual Figurative Art Convention & Expo (FACE) is designed to be hands-on; attendees can paint, grow, and become inspired in a fun, non-stuffy environment. The Expo Hall will provide vendors who serve the figurative art community.
The Fine Art Connoisseur FACE CONVENTION (Figurative Art Convention & Expo) will be held at Miami’s prestigious Biltmore Hotel November 7–11, 2017. It will offer a fully immersive experience for everyone who wants to learn (and talk) about figurative painting with world-class artists in this thriving field.
Paintings of the human figure take many forms, from the academic and classical to the expressively brushy and nearly abstract. It’s time for figure painting to have its own convention, a gathering place where museum-quality masters, and those striving to be, can exchange ideas, improve their skills, and form a community that advances the cause of representational art. This is not your grandfather’s conference. It’s vibrant, fun, upbeat, and it won’t be stuffy or political or an “old boys’ club.”
This conference will not only be filled with onstage painting demonstrations where you can see every detail and brushstroke on big screens.
The conference will also have special moments, special keynote speakers, and you can attend all the TRAC sessions, offering more speakers for the academic crowd.
