George Catlin painted this powerful medicine man of the Blackfeet nation in 1832. He posed with his mystery drum which contained the hidden and sacred mysteries of his healing art. Catlin recorded that he had “Captured looks and very resemblance of an aged chief who combines with his high office the envied title of mystery or medicine-man, doctor, magician, profit, soothsayer, jongleur and high priest, all combined in one person who was looked upon as ‘Sir Oracle’ of the nation”.
